The project

Major art dealer in Berlin during the Thirties, Paul Graupe led about 160 auctions, in which appeared paintings of the great est masters (Rubens, Rembrandt, Tiepolo, Corot, Menzel, Liebermann ...). Many of these works are now in major museums, others continue to appear regularly on the art market and some are from important Nazi - seized jewish collections. Of Jewish origin, himself, Graupe could however continue to work while benefiting from a special authorization. In 1937 he left Germany and settled in Paris, where he founded the company "Paul Graupe & Cie" and then had to go into exile in New York via Switzerland and Portugal. Paul Graupe died in 1953 in Baden - Baden. This book is part researches increasingly active that are now devoted to the history of German art market and wider Europe in the Thirties. Its t wo authors, Patrick Golenia and Isabelle le Masne de Chermont explored unpublished German and French archives, to set against the development of the art market in Berlin and Paris. The collaboration of these two authors, one in Paris, the other in Berlin, emphasises the transnational orientation of the project

Patrick Golenia studied art history and musicology at the Technische Universität Berlin. In autumn 2010, he defended his thesis entitled Magister "Paul Graupe (1881 - 1953): Rise of an art dealer in Berlin, 1907 - 1937" (supervisor: Prof. Bénédicte Savoy). Member of the curatorial staff of the exhibition "Gute Geschäfte" which presents the art galleries in Berlin from 1933 to 1945. His doctoral thesis focuses on the German ancient art market from 1933 to 1945.

Kristina Kratz-Kessemeier is a Berlin based Historian and Art Historian, focussing on Cultural History and History of Museums in the 19th/20th centuries. Her PhD thesis, Kunst für die Republik, on the art policy of the Prussian Ministry of Culture 1918-32, based on research at FU Berlin, was published in 2008. Since then, she has completed several conference and publication projects for Richard-Schöne-Gesellschaft für Museumsgeschichte, TU Berlin and other partners, including Museumsgeschichte. Kommentierte Quellentexte 1750-1950 (2010), Ludwig Justi - Kunst und Öffentlichkeit (2011) and Museen im Nationalsozialismus (conference 2013, publication 2015).

Isabelle le Masne de Chermont is conservateur général des bibliothèques à Paris. Co - author of the official report about looted art published in 2000 by the Mission sur la spoliation des Juifs de France , she has curated in 2008 the exhibition presented in Paris and Jerusalem, "" Looking for owners ? ", with an international symposium held at the Musée d’art et d’histoire du Judaïsme . She was co - chair of the “Looted Art” section of the 2009 Prague Holocaust Era Assets
