ArtTransForm (Completed)

T. Schloepke, Atelier in der Rue Lafayette 1856

DFG/ANR project (2010-2015)

ArtTransForm investigates the forms and consequences of the mobility of young painters between France and Germany in the years 1793 to 1870, encouraging us to revise traditional notions of separate national histories of art.

About the project

Manuals often describe the 19th century as the century of nationalism, and in fact this was the time when the idea of national schools was becoming established in art history. These two constructs are, however, largely at odds with historical reality, since they completely disregard the transnational dynamism of art as well as the sometimes difficult to assess transnational mobility of artists, particularly while they are training. After 1800, young art students thronged from German-speaking regions to Jacques-Louis David’s studio in Paris, and forty years later even more of them could be found in the studios of Paul Delaroche and Thomas Couture. The aim of the ArtTransForm project is to provide a comprehensive overview of this Franco-German mobility for the very first time. The bilateral team created a specially developed database of German-speaking artists who trained at the École des beaux-arts, at private studios and independently of institutions in Paris between 1793 and 1870. A directory of artists is also planned in two volumes. The work is accompanied by workshops and conferences.
