Research-based learning plays a key role at our Chair. Formats include archive seminars, edition seminars, project seminars (exhibitions), project days, excursions, and slams, which together provide a comprehensive experience of research phases, from the formulation of questions to the professional communication of results.
The life of images (SoSe 2014)

Held in the summer semester 2014, the project seminar “The life of images” offered students a space to investigate provenance research and the invisible antecedents of selected artworks at the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin.

A number of original designs from the
architectural competition “Öffentliche Concurrenz wegen Bebauung
der Museumsinsel in Berlin” (“Public Competition for Development
of the Museumsinsel in Berlin”), which was advertised in 1883, are
kept at the Technische Universität Berlin’s Museum of Architecture.
The “Museum visions” project aims to analyze this architectural
competition in depth.

This project was triggered by the realization that the voices of museum visitors are seldom considered in historical museum research. We were keen to gather historical accounts from international visitors to the Museumsinsel in Berlin in the form of an anthology.

Held from 2009-2010, this publication seminar aimed to use translations and contextualizing commentaries to make key international texts on museum history accessible to a wide audience.
